How does Death in Service Benefit work?

  • Set up by your business, it's an affordable policy that insures against the death of your employee.
  • The policy pays a cash lump sum payment to the loved ones of your employee. Typically, this is a multiple of their salary.
  • As long as your employee is in your employment, the death doesn't have to be the result of work or to have taken place at work in order for the policy to pay out.
  • The policy is held in trust and the lump sum payment is not usually subject to inheritance tax.
  • The premiums are not treated as a benefit in kind so won't cost your employees anything.
  • The premiums your company pay will normally benefit from being treated as an allowable business expense.
